Humans of Mem: Mandy Seller's Engineering Notes and Wedding Toasts
When Mandy began leading a technical engineering team in 2022, she quickly realized her trusty notebook couldn’t keep up anymore.
“I couldn’t write fast enough, and when I could, I often couldn’t read my own handwriting,” she laughed.
This week, we sat down with Mandy Sellers, Head of Partnerships at Solid, an embedded fintech platform, to learn about how Mem evolved from her go-to note-taking app into her trusted thought partner.
“I needed something that could handle complex information — like my notes about backend infrastructure — while still feeling as natural as grabbing a notebook and starting to write.”
In Mandy’s day-to-day work at Solid, precise documentation and seamless recall of information is crucial.
“I started leading a very technical engineering team in 2022, and realized I needed to trade my handwritten notes for an app that could capture complex information in real-time with easy cross-posting to tools like Slack and JIRA.”
“The ADHD in me is always looking for the new shiny thing,” Mandy said, reflecting on her journey to find the right note-taking solution for her meeting minutes and work todos.
After trying various note-taking apps, nothing quite replicated the simplicity of hand-writing notes in her notebook — until she found Mem.
What she loved most about Mem was how fluid it was for her to start capturing ideas.
“It was almost like you’re ripping a sheet off of a notepad, but with the ability to search for it later and actually find it,” Mandy shared. “Being able to jump in right away in a way that's pretty frictionless — that's what kept me around and made me want to explore more.”
Mem’s straightforward approach to markdown and simple interface made it an instant fit for her workflow. While it was Mem’s intuitive design that drew her in at first, discovering all the powerful ways Mem could support her work turned her into a devoted user.
In her day-to-day, Mandy uses Mem Chat, particularly during customer meetings with banks.
“During a recent offsite, I had Mem open on my screen, writing stream of consciousness notes. Afterward, I could simply ask Chat for key takeaways and action items, and Mem distilled everything down perfectly.”
Mandy particularly relies on chatting side-by-side with a note, now available in the Mem 2.0 Alpha. She also says that the return of the Mem 2.0 Alpha desktop app has been “a game changer” for her, since she prefers not to have multiple browser tabs open on her computer.
But Mem wasn’t just a fit for her work life. One particularly memorable moment in Mem was when Mandy used Mem to write her best friend’s wedding toast.
“I actually asked Chat if the toast was ‘too mean’ and to help me make it less mean,” she laughed. “That was my big ‘aha’ moment — realizing this tool knows me well enough to help refine my voice, not just organize my thoughts.”
From documenting complex technical specs to crafting heartfelt wedding toasts, Mem has evolved from a simple note-taking app into something more meaningful: a tool that understands how Mandy thinks and communicates.
"You don't have to leverage multiple different systems or think about 'where did I write that down?'" she says. "Everything just works together seamlessly."
