Mem 1.0 -> 2.0 Transition Guide
Mem 1.0 was a pioneer—it introduced semantic search, real-time related notes, and built-in AI chat before anyone else. But to truly deliver the fastest, easiest, and most reliable way to capture and organize your information, we needed a stronger foundation.
Mem 2.0 is that foundation. It’s been rigorously tested with Alpha users since September, and now it’s ready to support your most important work. In many ways, it will feel familiar. In some ways, it will feel new. But in every way, it’s more reliable.
As part of this transition, some older features won’t carry over to Mem 2.0. We’ve made these decisions to focus on speed, simplicity, and long-term reliability.
This guide is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the changes.
Platforms
New
Mem 2.0 Web App
The brand new Mem 2.0 experience will be available on Chrome, Safari, and Edge browsers, so you can bring up your Mem on any device, any time.
New
Mem 2.0 iOS App
The Mem 2.0 iOS app, currently available only via TestFlight, will replace the Mem 1.0 iOS currently found in the app store. The Mem 2.0 iOS app was built from scratch, and includes all of the features from the web and desktop apps, so you can quickly capture, organize, and use your information on the go. We also redesigned the Share to Mem feature, making it easier than ever to save something you want to remember from another app to Mem.
New
Mem 2.0 Mac App
In Mem 2.0, we have a new native experience for Mac, with updates shipping every week, so you will always have the latest features as we release them.
Coming Soon
Mem 2.0 Windows App
We will be introducing Mem 2.0 Windows app soon—stay tuned!
Features
New
Tables
Mem 2.0's new note editor has built-in support for tables, so you can easily store structured information within your notes.
New
Deep Search
Mem 2.0 quickly brings up simple keyword matches first, and then loads in additional results found with AI, called Deep Search results, over the next few seconds. For example, when searching "cheesy dip", Mem instantly pulls up the directly matching "Cheese Dip Recipe" note. A few seconds later, Mem finds a Deep Search result "Roasted Red Pepper Queso", which doesn't contain any of the search terms, but is relevant to your search query.
New
Time-Aware Chat
In Mem 2.0, we've designed Chat to have a deep understanding of time relative to your knowledge, so you can ask Chat about “the draft I wrote yesterday”, “the meeting with Christina last month”, or “the candidates I talked to last week.”
New
Side-by-Side Chat
Mem 2.0 introduces the ability to chat side-by-side with a specific note or collection. This gives you even more precision and focus in your conversations and ensures the discussion is relevant to exactly what you’re working on. This also allows you to interact with a note or a collection without interrupting the flow of your dialogue with Chat.
New
Copilot (formerly Related Notes)
Mem has always helped you surface and connect related information automatically, contextualizing your thoughts and unlocking insights without the need for manual organization. In Mem 2.0, we’ve built on the foundation of related notes and taken it to the next level, so you can easily connect the dots between your current and past ideas with more accuracy and insight. Copilot preloads related notes so it works when you're offline, too.
New
Shared Collections
Tagging a note with collections has always been the easiest way to organize the way you think, and in Mem 2.0, you can easily share this organization with others. At any point in time, you can share a collection with one or more people to enable them to quickly view, edit, and contribute notes to it.
New
Instant Sync
Mem 2.0's new sync system supports seamless usage across multiple devices and collaboration with multiple people. Mem automatically routes updates to ensure that you always see the most up-to-date version of content, no matter what device you're on. And in shared settings, if multiple people edit a note or collection at the same time, Mem intelligently merges those changes in real-time. This allows you and your team to work together without worrying about overwriting each other’s work.
New
Offline Mode
Mem 2.0 saves every change you make directly to your device for instant access and then syncs them to the cloud when you're connected to the internet. Mem also preloads your notes and stores them on-device for fast access. This ensures you can capture and use your notes any time, even when you’re offline.
Coming Soon
Templates
Templates will help you go from typing the same things over and over in your notes to quickly and consistently getting the exact structure you want in every note you create. This feature is coming soon.
Coming Soon
Mem 2.0 API
The Mem 2.0 API will provide a simple toolkit for building new ways of easily getting information into Mem. This feature is coming soon.
Coming Soon
Mem It Chrome Extension
The Mem It Chrome Extension will be the easiest way to save something from the web to Mem. With it, you'll be able to save a website or snippet to Mem in a single click. This feature is coming soon.
Coming Soon
Google Calendar Integration
In Mem 2.0, you will be able to quickly create notes based on calendar events from your connected calendars. This feature is coming soon.
Coming Soon
Mem It via Email
In Mem 2.0, you will be able to capture information to Mem by sending or forwarding an email to save@mem.ai. This feature is coming soon.
Coming Soon
Mem It via SMS & WhatsApp
In Mem 2.0, you will be able to capture information to Mem by sending in a text message via SMS or WhatsApp. This feature is coming soon.
Coming Soon
Link Sharing
In Mem 2.0, you will be able to easily share notes and collections with others by simply sending them a link. This is coming soon, and in the meantime, you're able to share notes and collections with other Mem 2.0 users by typing in their email address.
Replaced
Groups
Groups have been replaced with Shared Collections in Mem 2.0. Any groups you created or are a part of will be automatically converted to Shared Collections when the transition takes place. In Mem 2.0, Shared Collections provide an easy way to shared many notes with the same set of people over time.
Replaced
Spotlight
Instead of bringing Mem Spotlight to Mem 2.0, we’re going to release a Mem It Chrome extension, which will be the easiest way to save something from the web to Mem. With it, you'll be able to save a website or snippet to Mem in a single click.
Replaced
Smart Edit & Write
Smart Edit & Write has been replaced with side-by-side chat in Mem 2.0. When in side-by-side chat, it is aware of the note you're looking at, so you can refer to it as "this note". You can also copy/paste bits into side-by-side chat, and because it's aware of the full note contents, too, it'll act just as Smart Edit used to.
Replaced
Task view
While helpful, the ability to see all of your tasks in one surface led to many requests for advanced task management functionality in Mem. Our focus is on knowledge management, not project management, so we’ve removed this view from the app. In Mem 2.0, there’s a new ability to filter down your notes and show only the ones containing open tasks, so that’s a great workflow replacement to finding the notes you want to check back in on.
Removed
Published Notes
Any notes currently published to the Internet will be unlisted after the transition to Mem 2.0. Note that you will soon be able to share notes via link in Mem 2.0, so that’ll be the replacement workflow for sharing without typing in individual email addresses.
Removed
Scheduled notes
Any existing automations that cause new notes to be created on a recurring basis will be disabled after April 15. Note that there is rich support for templates in Mem 2.0, so you can build custom templates for notes that you want to create on a regular basis.
Removed
Inbox
While Inbox was cherished by some, it didn’t match many other user’s workflow and instead was a point of added complexity. In Mem 2.0, we encourage you to simply create an Inbox collection and add notes to it if you appreciate that type of workflow.
Removed
People view
While helpful, the ability to see all of your people in one surface led to much confusion on whether to use notes, collections, or a “person” page in Mem to organize content related to people. In order to simplify the experience, we’ve removed the view from the app. In Mem 2.0, we encourage you to simply create a note to represent a person and then @mention that note in other notes as needed. If you want to keep track of many people, you can create a collection called “People”, for example, and add your people notes to it.
Removed
Automatic Gmail syncing
We will no longer support the ability to automatically sync all of your emails to Mem. While the concept of Mem having awareness of all the knowledge in your email is aligned with our vision of the future, the sophistication of AI isn’t yet a good match for the amount of noise that is introduced into your knowledge repository by ingesting all of your emails. We hope to bring back a deeper integration with email in the future. In Mem 2.0, you will be able to save emails to Mem by forwarding them to save@mem.ai.
Removed
Comments
We are focused on synchronous knowledge capture and sharing workflows—for example, meeting notes—rather than asynchronous knowledge collaboration workflows. As a result, we don’t yet have the ability to comment on notes in Mem 2.0. If you created comments in Mem 1.0, they’ll be migrated to Mem 2.0 as notes that mention the original note.
Removed
Mem It for Telegram
While Mem It for SMS and WhatsApp will continue to work, Telegram wasn’t adopted widely enough to warrant its continued development and maintenance.
Removed
Mem It for X (Twitter)
While Mem It for X (Twitter) was a convenient way to save threads from X, the feature wasn’t adopted to the extent necessary to justify the new costs imposed by X on third party developers. With Mem 2.0, you will soon be able to quickly save threads when we release the Mem It Chrome Extension or by sharing to the Mem iOS app while on the go.
