The New Mem: All of Your Knowledge, None of the Distractions

Sep 15, 2023

Since the very beginning, Mem's goal has been to allow us to truly leverage our knowledge to the fullest. To be clear, this means that while notes have been the primary way to capture knowledge in Mem, we’ve aspired to be more than a note-taking app — we are continuing on our path to building the ultimate knowledge assistant.

Over the past month, we have been making significant updates to the product experience and surface area — one that aligns with our vision of building the ultimate personalized knowledge assistant and better enables knowledge utilization and capture.

We want to provide more clarity on exactly what features we're sunsetting and why, so you can better understand what the road forward looks like for Mem.

Eventually, we will be requiring that everyone switch to the new experience, but we will give at least 30 days notice prior to this. If these changes means Mem evolves away from what you need, we’re prepared to offer full refunds, no questions asked.

What we're sunsetting

We have decided to sunset features after careful thought about what we deem essential to the future of Mem. We know these are features that many use and love, but our decisions have been guided by a few key principles in tandem with holistic feature usage. Above all, we believe that these changes will help us provide you all with the best Mem experience.

We made decisions to sunset features based on a few key principles:

  1. Making sure that every feature in the app is one we plan to support and improve on in the future. Streamlining features enables us to better focus our energy on providing the best and most reliable experience in the app.

  2. Rethinking features that require manual organization. Features like Templates, Scheduled Mems, and Daily Mems have been an important part of the Mem workflow, and we know how well-loved they were. However, they are ones that require you to set up and manually maintain (akin to manually maintaining a hierarchical folder system), and we believe there’s a way to rethink how these features can serve us under the new lens of a proactive knowledge assistant.

  3. Concepts and features in Mem are ones that the knowledge assistant is aware of. Moving forward, we want to ensure that any new primitive we introduce (or re-introduce) to Mem is something that the knowledge assistant is aware of. We fully believe that an understanding of the people in your world, the things that you need to get back to, and your events are key elements to a helpful knowledge assistant, so we're deeply thinking about and working towards making sure those elements are once again a part of your Mem experience.

  4. Repositioning features in a way that better aligns with our vision. For example, some Flows will still exist, but we’re renaming Flows is now called “Add Sources” because we think the most valuable aspect of flows is helping you bring more knowledge into Mem so you can better leverage it. Groups was moved under Settings and renamed to Sharing Groups, to better set expectations on what Mem's collaborative capabilities are today. However, as you read in Kevin's roadmap update, we're excited about what Mem can do in a teams setting, so expect more changes and improvements in team collaboration features such as Groups in the future.

Here’s the full list of features we are sunsetting:

  • Tasks

  • Scheduled Mems and Daily Mems

  • Templates

  • People

  • Calendar

  • Comments

  • "Push into new mem"

  • Inbox

  • Published mems

  • (Temporarily) Desktop app - we will also re-introduce the Desktop app and resume making updates once we've completed our product experience improvements.

And the list of features we’ve repositioned:

  • Groups are now a section in Settings

  • Flows are now called “Add Sources”

And finally, what we're focusing on (read more in our fall roadmap):

  • Chat

  • Search

  • Collections

  • Similar Mems

  • Providing a bug-free and reliable product experience
