Mem 2.0 Alpha Testing Guide
Welcome to the Mem 2.0 Alpha!
Before diving in, you'll first want to understand a few things about the Alpha testing program:
By using the Mem 2.0 Alpha, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to these terms and conditions.
The Alpha testing program makes Mem 2.0 available for free while we continue active development.
Paid plans will be introduced down the line—after Mem 2.0 exits its Alpha and Beta phases—and you'll be able to export your notes anytime if you decide the paid plan isn't the right fit for you.
Certain feature areas are still being developed and are not yet included in the Alpha. All capabilities and limitations are outlined below.
You'll be asked to complete biweekly check-in surveys on your experience with Mem 2.0, to help us refine the product ahead of our public launch.
How to report bugs and give feedback
This sends an email to 2-dot-0-alpha-support@mem.ai with the subject line: "Mem 2.0 Alpha Bug Report". Please include a description of the bug, steps to reproduce it, what platform you're using (web app, Mac desktop app, or iOS TestFlight app), what device you're using, the email associated with your Mem account, and a screen recording of the bug, if necessary.
This sends an email to 2-dot-0-alpha-support@mem.ai with the subject line: "Mem 2.0 Alpha Feedback".
Capabilities and limitations
We currently support Mem 2.0 on web, Mac desktop, and iOS. Mobile web is not officially supported. The Windows app is coming soon, and an Android app is on the future roadmap.
There is no live syncing, connection, or relationship between 1.0 and 2.0. This means no actions you take in 2.0 will affect your experience in 1.0, and vice versa.
You must initiate import of your notes from Mem 1.0 to 2.0. Your notes have not automatically been copied over.
You can (but should try to avoid) using both 1.0 and 2.0 websites simultaneously. They have different URLs, so you can have them both open at the same time. Keep in mind, though, that there is no live syncing between them, so we recommend you move all of your usage to 2.0 to avoid the confusion of having to remember which version you created a note in.
You can't use both 1.0 and 2.0 simultaneously on Mem for iOS. This is because the app uses the same identifier as 1.0, so you have to first delete 1.0 in order to install the 2.0 app. Note that you can later on delete the 2.0 app and re-install 1.0 if you need.
Sharing is restricted only to other people in the 2.0 Alpha Testing group. In order to test sharing, please try sharing notes and collections within the Alpha testing cohort.
Groups are now shared collections and require all collaborators to be using Mem 2.0 Alpha.
On the web app, using Mem in multiple browser tabs at the same time is not yet supported.
Several features — such as templates, image understanding, rich embeds, link sharing, and exports — are still in development and will be released to the Alpha on a rolling basis. Follow our blog for the latest updates.

Welcome to another Mem 2.0 Alpha update! To kick off this week of testing, please fill out our Nov 11 Alpha check-in survey, which asks for your quality rating of key areas in Mem 2.0. Your survey responses help guide our work toward the Beta stage, and this survey introduces a couple of key new questions such as “Is the current version of Mem 2.0 ready to be transitioned from Alpha to Beta?”.
This week we launched Copilot on web, the Mac desktop app, and the iOS app. 🎉🎉🎉
These changes are currently live on the web app (v2.mem.ai in your browser). To update the iOS app, click “Update” next to the Mem app in Testflight. To update the Mac desktop app, click the “Mem” dropdown from your toolbar and click “Check for updates”.
Copilot is the evolution of relates notes in Mem. As you are typing in or viewing a note, click on the cursor Copilot icon in the top right corner of the app to view relevant notes. We’ll be continuing to ship updates to Copilot, including improving precision and recall. Your feedback is incredibly valuable as we iterate, so please keep it coming!
We also spent this week heads down on a few key improvements:
Optimizing how the Mem 2.0 web app manages memory ensure the app remains performant, fast, and reliable regardless of how many notes you have.
We made a change this week that caused slow initial load times. That’s because Mem 2.0 is designed to load slower on the first time you use it on a new device (depending on account size), but then be fast immediately afterward as well as on subsequent refreshes. In contrast, Mem 1.0 loaded fast, but often would be unexpectedly sluggish. If you continue to experience any issues, please reach out to 2-dot-0-alpha-support@mem.ai.
Continuing to ensure our sync system is rock-solid to ensure seamless note creation on all platforms.

We're <24 hours into the Alpha and I've been loving the amount of feedback I've been hearing. Thanks and keep it coming!
One question that's come up a few times is: “How do Mem 1.0 and Mem 2.0 play together?” Here's the answer:
There is no live syncing, connection, or relationship between 1.0 and 2.0. This means no actions you take in 2.0 will affect your experience in 1.0, and vice versa.
The Import from 1.0 features is a “snapshot in time” importer. This means at the moment you press the button, it makes a copy of all of the notes and collections you have in 1.0 and places the copies in 2.0. There's no automatic live syncing or updating that happens beyond that if you happen to continue creating or editing notes in 1.0.
You can (but should try to avoid) using both 1.0 and 2.0 websites simultaneously. They have different URLs, so you can have them both open at the same time. Keep in mind, though, that there is no live syncing between them, so I'd strongly recommend you move all of your usage to 2.0 to avoid the confusion of having to remember which version you created a note in.
You can't use both 1.0 and 2.0 simultaneously on Mem for iOS. This is because the app uses the same identifier as 1.0, so you have to first delete 1.0 in order to install the 2.0 app. Note that, you can later on delete the 2.0 app and re-install 1.0 if you need.
Have a great weekend!

Ahhh, the moment we’ve all been waiting for! You’re about to experience a whole new Mem. We’ve rethought and rebuilt nearly everything about it from the ground up. It’s the highest quality product we’ve ever built, and it sets a new bar for what’s coming next. I’m so proud of what we’ve built, and I think you will love it.
Thank you, in advance, for your feedback. Over the next few months, we’ll refine and round out 2.0 alongside your testing and feedback in advance of the general release of Mem 2.0 before the end of the year.
First off, there’s two key things to note:
Certain feature areas that are still being developed are not included (yet) in 2.0. We want to ensure the quality of everything you test is high and release-ready. As a result, areas that are yet to be included are: Related Notes, Side-by-Side Note Editing, Smart Write & Edit, Tables, In-Editor Command Palette (using the Slash key), Image Understanding, File Attachments, Rich Embeds, Templates, Link Sharing, Live Cursors, View-Only Permissions Levels, and other Integrations (like Text-to-Mem or Forwarding Emails to Mem). They will be gradually released into the Alpha for testing, and we’ll announce new updates to the Alpha on a weekly basis.
Sharing is restricted only to other people in the 2.0 Alpha Testing group. In order to test sharing, please try sharing notes and collections within your Alpha testing cohort (the Slack small group you’re a part of). We’ll share the emails linked to the Mem accounts of your fellow cohort members so you can test this.
Second, here are the things we’d particularly love testing & feedback on (either shared in your Slack small group or sent to kevin@mem.ai):
The Note Editor
How smooth do typing and formatting behaviors feel in the editor? Do numbered lists, bulleted lists, and checklists behave intuitively? Does undo/redo behave smoothly?
Does the editor markdown support behave as you’d expect (for headers, lists, horizontal rules, quote blocks, and code blocks)?
How well does the clipboard handling enable you to move content in and out of Mem? How well formatted is content you paste into Mem from other apps? How well formatted is the content you copy out of Mem into other apps?
How smooth and reliable is selecting text with your mouse or keyboard shortcuts in the editor? Can you intuitively drag and drop text selections around a note?
Is there anything else we should consider to make the note editor even better?
Search
How is the quality of search results? Are all of the results you’d expect to see included? Are there any irrelevant ones included? Are they ranked well?
How well does search find notes when you search by synonyms, natural language phrases, or categories?
Does search feel fast? Are there queries or situations where it feels slow?
Do all of the search filters & sort orders work as you’d expect? Are there filters you’d expect to see that are missing?
Is there anything else we should consider to make searching in Mem even better?
Chat
How is the quality of chat replies? Does it consistently consider all of the sources you’d expect it to?
Does chat feel fast? Are there replies or situations where it feels slow?
How effectively does chat honor date ranges in the messages you send it (for example, when asking it to summarize content from “last week”)?
How effectively does chat honor the intent of the messages you send it (for example, when asking it to focus on a specific topic from your notes)?
How well does chat help you understand where information came from? Are inline source annotations consistently shown? Are they intuitive and useful?
Are the behaviors of the chat side panel intuitive (how you open it, how you resize it, how it stays open as you navigate around the app, and how you close it)?
Does chatting side-by-side with a note feel intuitive and useful? Does Mem demonstrate a good understanding of the note you’re looking at in its responses?
Does chatting side-by-side with a collection feel intuitive and useful? Does Mem demonstrate a good understanding of the collection you’re looking at in its responses?
Does being able to @mention a note or #tag a collection in the messages you send to Mem feel intuitive and useful? Does Mem demonstrate a good understanding of the notes or collections you mention in your messages when it responds?
Is there anything else we should consider to make chatting with Mem even better?
Collections & Shared Collections
Does the new #Organize button and workflow at the top of the note editor feel like an intuitive and valuable way to add a note to a collection?
Do the collection labels in the note header as well as in all listview rows help you make visual use of your collections?
Does #tagging a collection inside the contents of a note behave the way you’d expect? Does it consistently add the note to the collection you tagged?
Does collection sharing behave the way you’d expect it to? Are new notes that are added to the collection consistently shared with everyone who has access to the collection?
Is there anything else we should consider to make collections and collection sharing even better?
Syncing & Offline
Does every action you take in the app, from creating a note, to typing in a note, to organizing a note into a collection consistently feel instant?
When you’re connected to the internet, do all changes you make on one device consistently show up within 1 second across all devices you have Mem open on?
Are all actions you take while offline automatically synced to the cloud and other devices when you next connect to the internet?
Is there anything else we should consider to make the syncing & offline experiences even better?
